One bargaining tool used in some trades is a team paying all, or some of a players cap, for the remainder of that season, or in some rare cases, the rest of the current contract.
Here are the rules.
- Each team has a limit of 10,000,000 in total salaries paid, or being paid in a season.
- Each team has a limit of 3 players contracts it can be paying on, or for. No matter what the amount is.
- If the player in question has been traded, the original salary payment agreement will be voided.
- Only the salary of the player being dealt can be traded. (ie... You can't add a random guys salary from your roster, as a bargaining chip if he's not in the deal)
*Note - The only exception to the rule is players claimed on re-entry waivers. The team who waived him is responsable for half the players cap hit for the remainder of his contract, and does not go against the rules stated above.
